GitHub Agentic Workflows
Open-source GitHub Next project: write agent automations in Markdown and compile them to GitHub Actions so Copilot, Claude, Codex or another coding agent can triage issues, investigate CI failures, update docs and open pull requests, with guardrails.
๐ฒ Open source (MIT) and generally available. Runs in your GitHub Actions; you pay for the coding agent/AI credits and Actions minutes you use (the default Copilot engine needs a Copilot license). Source: github.blog (checked Nov 1, 2026).
Pros & cons
๐ Pros
- Plain Markdown workflows compiled to standard Actions YAML
- Read-only by default, sandboxed behind an agent firewall, with threat detection on proposed changes
- Bring your own engine: Copilot, Claude, Codex or others; `gh aw forecast` estimates AI spend
๐ Cons
- Tied to GitHub and GitHub Actions
- AI credit costs can add up on busy repos
